Iraqi death squad detained - U.S.
Iraqi death squad detained - U.S.
Iraqi highway patrolmen dressed as commandos, like those seen here, are accused of being in death squad.

Four members of a "death squad" from Iraq's Interior Ministry have been arrested, a U.S. general in Iraq says. Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch confirmed a Chicago Tribune report that said "the first evidence of a death squad" came when 22 men dressed in police uniforms were detained at an Iraqi army checkpoint.

The inter-city train, which was traveling from Thessaloniki to Alexandroupolis with about 108 passengers on board, struck the van near the town of Strimonas, the officials said.

The driver of the van was killed and at least 13 people on board the train were injured, three of them seriously, the officials reported.

MP wins 'Saddam payoff' libel case

Thursday, February 16, 2006 Posted: 1409 GMT (2209 HKT)

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Britain's George Galloway has won a long-running libel dispute with the Daily Telegraph after the newspaper agreed to drop a final appeal and pay the politician 150,000 pounds ($260,700) damages.

The newspaper had said it would launch an appeal to the House of Lords after it lost an earlier appeal in January over a 2003 story saying Galloway had been "in the pay" of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

On Thursday, the paper said it had dropped the case.

The newspaper based its story on documents it said it found in the abandoned Iraqi Foreign Ministry building in Baghdad after the invasion to topple Saddam in 2003.

The report claimed Galloway had received 375,000 pounds a year in payoffs from the Iraqi government, something he had always denied.

"The Telegraph Group has decided not to petition for leave to appeal," a spokeswoman for the newspaper said.

The paper had argued it was in the public interest to publish the documents.

Galloway, 51, was kicked out of the Labour party for his outspoken opposition to the Iraq war and last year became an MP for the Respect party.

His two-week appearance in reality TV show "Celebrity Big Brother" last month angered many of his constituents in east London who felt his time would have been better spent representing their interests and attending parliament.

Galloway said the Telegraph would have to pay the legal costs of both sides.

"I put everything I had on the line in this case and I have been totally vindicated," he said in a statement. "I'm obviously delighted to have finally won but I'm extremely vexed that this has taken so long to settle."
